CHP Explorer Training
CHP Explorer
Once accepted into the Explorer program, Explorers will participate in 4 Academy levels to enhance their skills as they progress through the program. These Academies provide basic training in a number of different areas and subjects that help prepare an explorer for the CHP Academy. Upon successful completion of each level of training, Explorers shall receive a Certificate of Accomplishment in recognition of their achievements.
Explorer Level I Academy
The Level I Explorer Academy outlines the basics expected from explorer cadets. This includes more than 24 hours of instruction, typically held at the Area office. Topics include the history of the CHP, the California Vehicle Code, CHP’s patrol vehicle radio equipment and communications, physical fitness, community outreach, as well as instruction on leadership and ethics. The completion of Level I introduces explorer cadets to the foundational pillars of a law enforcement career and prepares them for the challenges ahead.
Explorer Level II Academy
The Level II Explorer Academy is a 16-hour course that covers CPR basics and first aid. Upon completion of the Level II Academy, explorers will become CPR certified. This certification is renewed annually by explorers of all ranks, giving them essential knowledge that is key for first responders.
Explorer Level III Academy
The Level III Explorer Academy is an intense 6-day training course which provides explorer cadets the opportunity to experience life as a CHP cadet. During this training, explorer cadets will live at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento. Through the 6 demanding days, explorer cadets will train with the CHP Academy’s Physical Training Unit, and receive instruction on over 20 subjects, including crash investigation, California Vehicle Code, effective communication skills, DUI investigations, and laws of arrest. Upon successful completion of the Level III Explorer Academy, explorer cadets are awarded their cloth explorer badge and will make the well-deserved transition to explorer.
Explorer Level IV Academy
Like the Level III Academy, the Level IV Academy is a 6-day training course. During this training, explorers will live at the CHP Academy in West Sacramento. The Level IV Academy is exclusively reserved for CHP explorers who have successfully completed Levels I, II, and III; are at least 20 years of age; and are in excellent health and physical condition. In addition to the physical training and DUI investigation training, Level IV attendees are given the rare opportunity to drive patrol vehicles on the Emergency Vehicle Operations Course.
State Capitol Explorer Challenge
The State Capitol Explorer Challenge is a competition designed to test the physical and mental capabilities of each Explorer, as well as dedication to the Explorer Program and a future career in the CHP. Explorers can test their skills in real-life situations, including traffic stops and building searches in both day and night scenarios. The competition will evaluate the Explorers’ physical abilities and promote teamwork through group challenges such as obstacle courses and tug of war. Mental abilities will also be tested through various examinations including a law enforcement entry-level written exam.
